Meet MADRE

About

MADRE is an international women's human rights organization and feminist fund. We partner with community-based women's groups worldwide facing war and disaster.

Our mission is to advance women’s human rights by meeting urgent needs in communities and building lasting solutions to the crises women face.

Our history is rooted in progressive movements for peace, justice and women’s human rights.

Our Vision

MADRE works for a world where all people enjoy the fullest range of individual and collective human rights. A world where resources are shared equitably and sustainably. A world where women participate effectively in all aspects of society. And a world where people have a meaningful say in policies that affect their lives.

We bring our vision to life with an understanding of the inter-relationships between the issues we address. And we are committed to working in partnership with women at the local, regional and international levels who share our goals.

How We Work

MADRE's unique approach mobilizes simultaneously across three strategies: grantmaking, organizational strengthening and legal advocacy.

This model enables us to use service provision and community organizing to build women's skills and leadership to advocate for lasting social change.

We provide long-term and flexible support to groups, led by women impacted directly by war and disaster, that are small, located in inaccessible or remote areas, or below the radar of large aid agencies.

Our advocacy brings community-based women into policymaking arenas and ensures that legal victories move from paper to practice.

Grantmaking

We fund work to meet urgent needs in communities, enhance women's leadership and build strong local institutions.

Organizational Strengthening

We strengthen the skills of individuals and organizations to mobilize in communities, influence policies and sustain movements.

Legal Advocacy

We mobilize our team of advocates and lawyers to train and accompany partners in shared campaigns for policy change.

35 years of global women's activism.
